Attachment

Kay, I'm gonna put this simply: We're all attached to something. No matter if you're a depressed, isolated cold-stare anime protagonist or happy-go-lucky maniac, we've all been attached at some point in our lives. And that starts at birth.

  1. Caregiver-infant interaction ... in humans
  2. The stages of attachment
  3. The role of your- sorry, the father
  4. Animal studies of attachment... because that made sense, for humans
  5. Attempts to explain attachment: Bowl-cut Bowlby
  6. Ainsworth distressing babies: The 'Strange Situation'
  7. Childhood: Which potential cause of severe intimacy issues are you?
  8. English Isn't The Only Language: Cultural Variations.
  9. Bowl-Cut's theory on... *spins wheel* maternal deprivation.
  10. Romanian Orphans: Not Only Are They Orphans, But They're Being Studied... institutionalisation.
  11. How YOUR parents fucked up your views on intimacy: the sequel!
1. Caregiver-Infant (Parent-Child): Why hanging out with your kid is important.

We've all been there. The birth of a child! What a miracle!... Sure. You're staring down at a lump of baby and wondering, wow, this dude sucks. Unless you're one of those people who likes babies. Um, whatever floats your boat.

But these little ... bundles of joy lead interactions, apparently. According to some old dude, the 'adult' responds to the behaviour of some baby. From day one, their plans to dominate not only infant-caregiver interaction but at large the entire world is made clear, and I- ahem, WE are the only ones who can tell... the rest call us crazy. We'll see who's crazy.

The word 'reciprocal' (Reciprocity) means two-way. Have you ever had an unrequited crush? One that didn't reciprocate your feelings? Couldn't be a healthy caregiver and their demonspawn. They both take part in the interaction, and therefore respond to each other. Ever had a little tyke grin at you on the bus? Their caregiver probably smiled back a whole lot. They expect one back.
